deer fell off wall broken skull plate?

Submitted by Tim on 12/15/2003. ( ) 141.151.228.10

The deer thatI munted 2 days ago fell off the wall
and broke the skull plate. The plate is still intact but it is lose. I can wiggle the left side of the horn a little.
I pushed the remaing clay that was still moveable around where the broke was. I was wondering if the clay will be strong enough to hold it or is there a way I can give the plate support?
Any info I 'll appreciate Thanks Tim

Open it up and put the screws to it.

Dry clay has 0 strength, nodda none. Fix it right!

fill the skull cavity with bondo-glass before screwing it down? Adds a lot of stability for these situations and guys(custmers) who carry there mount around by the anlers. Good luck- Jeff F.

It can be fixed

Tim,
I had a customer bring me an old mount that fell from the wall and cracked the skull plate, making the antlers loose.
Here is how I fixed it:
I used Smooth cast 320 and a very large syringe, the kind you would use to give a cow a shot. I'm going to say it held about 2 ounces.
I drilled a hole large enough for the syringe to fit into on top of the skull plate (1/4 inch maybe smaller). A second hole was drilled just beside the first. The deer was placed on a mounting stand to hold it in place. The Smooth cast 320 sets in 5 minutes and is cured in 15 minutes. I filled the syringe with the mixture (1/2 a and 1/2 b) then allowed an air bubble to float back and forth to mix the 320.
After about 1 minute of rotating the syringe the mixture is pushed into the skull area through the hole. It will take the full amount the first time. Hold the antlers at the proper position for the 5 minutes if they are loose. repeat the step of mixing the 320 until you can see the mixture coming up the second hole. The hair should cover the small holes after the process is complete. The syringe can be clean with thinner between applications to keep if from freezing up. The brain cavity area is now full and the antlers are now secure.
good luck. Marshell

Screw it

Have fixed a couple this way, and seemed to be just fine. Drill two holes down through the burr. Screw in a 4" screw. Apoxie Sculpt over the screw heads, and paint to blend. Fixed!

Thanks

I used a few screws to the remaiming plate and it seemed to to work thanks to all of those who responded. Although Marshall your idea seemed like it would be another good method as well Thaks alot
