I just finished turning a whitetail that had some ear damage. The cape had already been salted and the ears were pretty dry, making it more difficult than usual. I got one ear turned all the way, unfortunately not before making alot of sewing work for myself. The other ear however, had a big and farely fresh scab an inch from the ear tip. I did my best, but couldn't get it turned to the tip. When I tried to turn it through the scab, I just went all the way through. Should I see how it looks after tanned, trim ear below scab and sew? I looked through the archives and didn't find anything on this specifically. Thanks

Use the nice round end of a kitchen knife. Wwork the edge of the ear over it inside out. you can clamo the knife blade first in a vice.
Using ear liners, cut them to fit, with a 1/8 inch area around the edge of the ear. Now when you go to glue the earliner in place you will need to use one of the Epo-Grip 2 parts the stuff that sets n about 10 minutes is best. Go slow and do each section of the ear as if were the complete ear. Keep your work fairly slow working from the outer edge/tip to the base where the clay for the ear butt will go.
Once you have the deerhead mounted and are finishing it you can epoxy putty or E-Grip seam filler and repair to create the scab, tint with artist pastels or colored chaulk.
