Shead collectors....

Submitted by Joe T on 12/20/2003. ( Joseph_Turc@yahoo.com ) 64.12.96.202

Has anyone ever used one of these before? It's basicly a bucket full of feed with bunggie cords crossing all around the bucket and once the deer puts there head in there if thier antlers are ready to come off the bunggie cords will make it happen. I was thinking about using one of these this year.

Couple more questions to those who have seen this product....do you think it would be easy to make a homeade one, looks like it would be? Also when would be the best time to put one of these out to collect sheads in Wisconsin. I was thinking the end of Feb. but latley I've been seeing deer with antlers on in to early April.

Thanks for any input!

Don't Spend Your Money

Joe-

Don't waste your money... I have a buddy who takes rebar pieces and stakes out a square with the pieces every 12" or so apart. You can make it as big as you want...at least 3'x3'. Then run wire from rebar to rebar...leaving enough room for the deer to get their heads in, but close enough to get some antler contact. He usually goes about 8" or so off the ground. Then toss some corn, feed, etc...and let nature do the work. He starts early...in late Jan. so the deer get coming in before they are ready to drop. Make sure you feed daily to get them coming back for more. He's always careful to not give too much so that they deer are "dependant" on the feed...just enough to make them want to come by for a snack. He sets several "traps" out and gets several nice sheds per year. Occassionally you'll get both sides in one feeding...

Good luck.

Joe I bought one last year And...........

Got some awesome sheds out of it. I got two mached sets one set scoring over 170. Nice thing about this antler trap thing is the deer can't get their antlers caught and broken off prematurly.

I had a friend who built one like the one described above and ruined acouple of good bucks when they broke their pedicals when they got caught in the wire. He had a buck that scored 168 the year before he got tangled, the year after he shot him and he had one nice side and the side that he broke his pedical he only grew a little clump.

what a cool way to get some antlers

Maybe the bungy cord ones are different, but Ill tell you something...as a guy who raises deer, the first time you see a buck all wrapped up in some fence, wire, rope or cable will be the last time youll wanna set one of those gadgets up. Another thing. All of my deer feeders have a shallow tray where the feed comes out, so their antlers always clunk against the wall of the feeder as they feed. Ive never had an antler shed in one of the feeders. They feed from these feeders every day. What Im guessing is its still hit and miss. If you wanna walk and find those sheds like I do, have a blast. If you want to spend the money for one of those other things, at least think about the deers safety and get one they can get out of if their antlers get tangled up. If nothing else out of respect for the animal. Thanks for letting me preach!
