Slug holes in lower jaw?

Submitted by Steve on 12/22/2003. ( ) 12.177.8.34

I had a deer brought in that has two slug holes in it's lower jaw right where the brown hair meets the white under jaw hair. They are about 3-4" to 1" in diameter and are staggered at about a 45^ angle with maybe 1/4" of skin between the two. Now I've never had a problem like this one so I figured I'd seek some advice. Do you think this is repairable or should I recomend getting a different cape. Now one other thing, this deer also had a torn ear right in half and about 2/3's the length of it's ear and she wants the ear left split in half as it was when she shot it. I'm afraid that there is too much hide gone to repair to make it look "untouched". What do you all think?

use some very small diameter thread and try sewing it up. If it cant be fixed get a new cape and just split the ear like her old one.

I would charge for the repair.

I would not do it for free. The customer should know of the damage when they brought it to you. If it is not repairable I would not just replace the cape free of charge. Unless you have an abundance of capes and are willing to give it up for free. You need to be paid for your time repairing. Or you need to be paid for purchase and the processing of the replacement cape. Just my 2cents.

Steve, If she's ok with the ripped ear she most likely is ok with the scar on the jaw that will probably be there after the repair. Do the sewing in very small stitches useing thin fishing line. I hope you are tanning this cape. Just another learning oppo---enjoy, Aaron H.rtunity
