Skull mount question

Submitted by POP on 12/27/2003. ( ) 67.10.164.46

hello,

I have reviewed the archives and found definite answers as to how to
Euro mount a deer head. I havent found a scenario thus far as it relates to my situation and so i thought i'd ask you for help.

I skinned out my deer head and left it out in woods for about 2 months. I just retrieved it last night. It still stinks a bit and has some hardened flesh on it. What is the best way to complete the process for cleaning this head? Do I boil it at this point and then peroxide it? Should i just soak it in peroxide at this point? Should i just bury it in a flower pot of soil for another 2 months? (seems like a long time)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Put it in a bucket of water

You definitely don't want to boil it at this stage. Submerge it in a barrel of water (if you're in a cold climate, you might have to wait til spring). Then hose it off. Be very careful with the peroxide as it will bleach your antlers and restaining them never looks the same as the natural color.
