Whitetail Nose Width

Submitted by Lance on 12/29/2003. ( ) 206.159.163.40

Hi,
Just want to say before I begin that this forum and the pros that give their input is very helpful and very appriciated. Ok, here goes.... Has anyone out there noticed that the forms from different companies seem to all have different widths in the nose? I always notice a difference in this area. I must say that the forms from McKenzie seem to fit better than any of the others. This is my opinion only but some just seem to have the "cow" look in the nose.Just looking for conversation on this topic.
Thanks to all and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all,
Lance

All forms are different

The different forms from different suppliers are all sculpted by different sculpters. These forms are only representations of the specific artist that sculpted each form.

On the sculptors whitetail experience and references. For example if a particular sculptor has lived in the deep south, and uses the southern whitetail as reference, than the face will often be thinner, giving the impression of a longer muzzle. wile one from the far north will be broader. A broad muzzle would naturally include a wider nose.
Southern deer also seem to have thinner necks in comparison to the eye to nose, I find the rutting southern whitetail form often fit pre rut northern whitetail.

Many forms are not sculpted correctly

I agree with tenbears but will take it one step further. Many of the forms on the market are not sculpted correctly, esp in the nose, lip line, brisket shape and width between the eyes. This may be due to molds warping, molding/casting capabilities, or making a form easier to use (the long lip lines comes to mind here). Study your ref and then study your forms. After a while you will see that some are easier to mount on, some are for Northern deer, and some are just sculpted better. Most of the newer forms coming out (Gene Smith, Hilton Eppley, Joe Meder, Rick Carter, etc...) are far more accurate then what we had several years ago.

Last all deer are different, it would be impossible for one supplier to sculpt a form for every size deer. I take many more measurements then what the catalogs require to order. Whenever I use a particular form I also record the measurments of that form (my measurements) for future ref. In a few short years you will know what forms fit "your" deer best.

if you take note, next time you have 10 deer heads laying on the floor waiting to be skun, get your measurerite or calipers and start checking them out, you will find they also vary in size and texture
cosiderably
