relaxing a hide

my hide is oiled and dry.I broke the hide (made softer) Now do i soak in cool water with some salt than drain and put in a plastic bag over night in the frig. than ok to mount the next day and will the hide paste worke with a damp hide.even though i broke the hide it still seems a little stiff to mount as is.

No need to add salt. The salt taken up by the hide wile relaxing, will crystallize when drying, you will have a mount with salt crystals on the hide. simply wet the hide with water. I usually use a 5 gallon bucket 3/4 full and about 1/2 Ounce of Downey fabric softener, Relax-r or Kemal-4. Soak the hide for a few minuets, then drain, and bag. That should have it ready the next day.
