Need help; newly mounted deer "leaking"?

Submitted by Chris on 01/19/2004. ( ) 69.10.192.77

Hello,

I just completed a beautiful whitetail mount. It turned our great except that the day after I mounted it, a runny, creamy, salty, milky fluid began leaking from the brisket area, that is the color of the hide paste began leaking out. A fair amount has leaked out, and if I force my hand from the upper neck down, you can hear a fluid inside, and I squeeze it out the bottom. I am wondering if this is a major problem, or will it just harden up, and if there is any way for me to save this beautiful mount?

Yep you used a bit to much. Set up the mount so that it can drain out and press as much as you can out of it. Next place a fan near it so it dries a bit faster. Just keep an eye on the mess and clean up as it dries out.
Also not a problem unless it's an epoxy hide paste.

Some skins from tanneries really " plump" up when rehydrated. Let the cape drain for a while draped over a sink edge then squezze out more water , say after about 45 minutes. Make sure and use galvanized brad nails and brad nail all low areas otherwise drumming may occur with that amount of moisture. Do not worry, this has happened to all taxidermists at least once. Do as Frank instructed and press as much out as possible. Then remember to brad nail!
