I've been using critter clay around the eyes. With the next few deer, I plan on using Epo-Grip for the first time...but I can't imagine this working well on wet clay. Therefore, I was wanting to try and give the synchron eye capsules a shot. It seems as if shrinking would be much less. Any comments, corrections, suggestions, etc. for this? (I'm not worried about giving these deer any "special" expressions...just the traditional facing forward, ears forward "alert" look.)
Thanks!

Personally I dont like them, I think it gives the eyes more of a bug eyed look than a natural look, try one for yourself and see. I tried them on a nice 8pnt shoulder mount I mounted a few years back and I did not get the results That I thought I would get. Every time I look at this mount I want to throw it in a tub of hot water to rehydrate the cape just so I can jerk the eyes back out and do them right. STICK WITH CLAY>>>>>
When I first started in taxidermy I thought the easy way to go would be to use the synchron method. Although they mount faster when setting them the deer always seem to look bug eyed and drunk so i have not used them since. Its funny Rick because as im sitting here reading this post the very deer that I used them on is sitting in my tub rehydrating so I can tear out them damn eyes and re do the mount.
Hehe thats funny!
Stick to the clay you have more natural looking eyes and they are easier to shape the day after once the drying process has started.
I tried synchrons on two deer last year. I had a heck of a time trying to get the eyes to sit equally in the two capsuls. I had about five sets at the time. But one of the capsuls just held the glass eye differently (rotation) than the other. I beleieve it was an inaccuracy in the molding process. I dinked around longer w/those @#$%& things trying to get them symetrical than I do w/clay or epoxy sculpt. Sent the rest back.....just my expereience-Virg'
