How long to dry cape?

Submitted by Chris on 01/24/2004. ( ) 69.10.192.77

Hello,

I finished a whitetail about a week ago. The hair on the face has dried and locked in place, but from the neck back is still really loose. Some hair comes out easy, but stays in by itself. How long will it take for it to dry in place. I know it will take a little longer than usual, since I live in the humid pacific northwest.

Chris

Where do you have the deer drying? I'm from Georgia, when a deer takes a little to long to dry I will move it into the house in a back bedroom with a fan and it will only take a few days for it to dry. I usually don't have a problem with them drying out though.

When you cure your hide I do it the old fashion style. I cure my
hide by taking non-indoize salt, cover hide completely, then hang
for 3 days, then wash it completely in cold water, then let it hang
until the water drains, then it is ready to go on the mold. My hair
has never slipped using non-indoize salt. The water will not wash
the salt out of your skin once it is dryed, cause the hide is cured
like a ham which keeps the hair from slipping. Try this and e-mail
me back. you wont be disappointed.
