Septum cracked

Submitted by Mike Dunbar on 01/27/2004. ( ) 64.91.85.32

Here's a first. I cast a septum from 5 min. epoxy. After checking on the mount after tucking the skin, I now notice the septum is cracked. There is a hairline crack in it. How can I hide it without losing the translucent effect of the epoxy and the texture from the cast?

And I don't know how I cracked the damn thing either...

Wrong casting material

The reason it cracked is exoterm. It generates a lot of heat when it is curing - then while it's still hot - or as it cools - it cracks.

Fill it with a little more epoxy applid with a small toothpick or wire... sometimes gel cyanoacrylates (superglues) will work as well.

Get a different casting material with low exotherm and you'll avoid that in the future.

Exotherm... not term..

Thanks Raven

I talked to Steve at Newton Supply and he said the same things. It sure is exothermic, that stuff gets pretty hot when it sets up.
