I've tried the search option but can't find an answer to my question.
I am planning on slowly getting into taxidermy. I have several deer mounts in my home and the harvest tag is missing on one of them.
In Illinois, does the temporary harvest tag have to stay with the deer mount after it comes back from the taxidermist?
If the answer is yes, what can I do to replace a lost one.
If the answer is no, does the answer change if I become a taxidermist?
Thanks!

No, you don't need a tag in Illinois once it comes back from the taxidermist.
If you become a taxidermist, you open yourself to inspections. Personally, I would not do this until you are ready to take in customer's work. You don't need a license in Illinois if you're ONLY working on your own stuff.
If you do get your license, I would put a cross reference tag on any and all specimens in your shop (and home) just to be safe. Then of course, put in all the pertinent information in your log books. "Personal Specimen" will work along with your signature stating that YOU legally harvested it (or your hunting license number).
In Illinois here - the state of "subject to interpretation", you are best off OVER-DOCUMENTING things than visa versa. Better to be safe than sorry...
