Gary Mackey/Deer ears question

Submitted by Bruce on 03/12/2004 at 08:15. ( ) 207.69.79.162

I'm doing taxidermy for 47 yrs. I help everyone who needs it ! I know someday I'll need the help and they"ll be there 4 me.

Gary, I found the above on one of your posts.

I've been trying to get some advice on mounting a deers ears, for over a week now. It doesn't seem like most old taxi's want to share much information, unless you pay them. You seem to be my kind of man.

I tried Epo-Grip two part on my last mount. Did't like the results. I don't have lots of money to go out and try tons of products. I also have a limited number of deer to work on. I am a beginner/ hobbist at this time. I have been given advice by Steve at Epo-Grip, on how to improve my results with Epo-Grip. Also, someone advised me to use chalk and Alzerian Crimson Artist oil to maintain color. If you completely remove the cartilage and use ear liners, I am requesting some guidance/advice/product reviews etc.

I use a saftee acid pickle and ez100 & tan my capes in house.

Thanks

Epoxies and oil don't mix!

Gary,

The use of chalk or dry coloring compound for coloring epoxies is fine, however the addition of oil based paint is not the best idea. Oil acts like a releasing agent and could effect the adhesion of your earliner to the ear. If you notice the oil based paint does not want to readily go into the mixture. Oils, waxes and greases act as releasing agents for epoxies.

I use Buckeye supreme adhesive for my ears. I sand the earliners and then wipe them down with Laquer thinner before applying the glue. The Buckeye paste works very well, and if you get it on the ears it comes right off after it dries. I just paint with an air brush after it dries.

Buckeye

I use Buckeye Supreme about 75% of the time. It works great, but if the liner does not fit well, such as in the case with large eared bucks that are too big for even large liners, I then use bondo to fill in the gaps. In eithor case, I wash the ear thuroughly with laquer thinner before glueing it in place. I've never experienced any drumming with eitor method but the Buckeye Supreme is faster as it sticks instantly, where as the bondo takes a while to set up.

Buckeye hide paste works great I also add a little hydromist in gill red on early season capes. This shows through and no other painting is needed

I have spent much time in the archives. The orange button has been my best friend at times. At others a complete waste of time. I have no desire to read 312 posts. At this point I am looling for specific guidance. Based on my current experience level.
