I am fairly new to taxidermy and do it as a hobby. I have my first deer to do that has about a 1 1/2" notch in its ear from fighting or so and is healed up (not a fresh tear). The hide is frozen right now and I will be thawing it out soon to turn and flesh.
Could anyone give me some tips for turning this ear and mounting it with the notch or do I have to sew it up?
Thanks for the help.

just be careful and take your time and you can turn it. i do alot of high fence deer and i have that problem alot it just takes a little time. if it tears then you can sew it. good luck
are you useing ear liners or bondo,i bondo all my ears its a little easier i think when you have tears ,just zap-a-gap the edge and bondo.if you use liners you have to notch the liner to fit
I prefer to glue up the edges of ears over sewing, Walmart sells a glue called Bondini, it works on "oily and dirty surfaces" and does a great job.
Liners are much easier with notched ears. The repair isnt critical as it would be for oozing bondo, and you notch the liner AFTER you insert it. Check the archives if you need more info, I know its in there. Try under notched ear. Good luck.
Thank you for your suggestions and thanks for the tip of going to the archives Bill. I wasn't aware of them. This is not a fresh tear, but an old war wound that's healed up. I just wanted to know tricks for turning the ear and getting a liner to fit. Sounds like I need to go slow.
Thanks everyone.

I turned the ears normally and went slow on the notch and it worked fine. I was able to use the removed cartilage as a template for the liner. I was very pleased with the result. Thanks for your input.
