I didn't get enough hide paste around the mouth of the whitetail and there is a slight gap where the upper and lower mouth has shrank. What would make this less obvious? (other than hanging it high in a shadowed area of a wall!) Should I use a light/matching nearby fur color or use a dark color to make it look shadowed?
What do you all do when this occurs?
I saw a recent response from February where George Roof mentioned apoxie sculpt...I'm assuming this is for the lip/nose area.
Thanks!

You have to con your way through it. In your case, Apoxie and paint are likely to be the way. Rebuild or cover the gap and texture the Apoxie to look like the lips. Then paint. If it's especially bad, I'd try rehydrating the hide and retucking if you didn't use an epoxy hide paste.
We had the same problem. The lower lip has slightly pulled out. We used Dry preserve so there is some white showing. I now know various ways to prevent this and all the varying reasons on why it may have happened. Thanks to the archives that is! My question is the same as the previous which color would be best? It's pretty narrow, but I think if black is used it would be over done. Also, I am thinking that since i used Dry Preserve, rehydrating is not an options. Thanks for your time.
Next time flesh and salt your hide when your customer brings it to your studio and alloe it to dry. Then send the skin to one of the many tanneries all across the country and when you mount it up you will not have the problems such as this.
