Does anyone use a chisel to remove antlers from WT? If so how does it work, anything to watch for? I might try it this year just to see what happenes. Thanks

antler removal

Joe T, I chisel off the real shorthaired deer as the very short incision is easier to conceal. For me the added time skinning out does not merit using it on all deer yet but then I just started using this method this past seson. I know some who do all deer this way and say it saves time. What I have decided is a VERY sharp chisel works faster requiring fewer strikes with the hammer. Also there is some chance of cracking the skull plate which can disqualify official scoring though most big bucks' skulls should be thick enough not to be much of a risk. I did get in a super fine whitetail cape just after the season which I skinned this way thinking it might make a nice competition piece. Enjoy, Aaron H.
