i heard of a method for doing deer heads were you dont have to sew all the way up the back
im guessing you cut the skin from around the burrs
then remove the skull plate
and the resume skinning the deer
do you still use a y cut
but just dont run it all the way down the back
am i on the right page?
is there any thing else i need to know?
does it make shaving more difficult this way?
anyplace were i can get more info on this would be appreciated
such as a book on a video
i think this method would work well on my early season archery kills
thank you all verry much

Breakthrough or Taxidermy Today (not sure which) had an article where you cut from antler to antler and then used a chisel to remove the skull plate. Also the Y or 7 cut you only cut down the back of the head about 4 inches or so. I hope this helps with your question. Shaving is not difficult with any of these methods.

Skinning and fleshing video has this demonstrated, a short y as described above. Roll down the neck and shoulder skin as far as you can and remove as much neck as possible,(take measurements first). Deer I get from the local processor are already cut off inside right tight to the head. Then after making your short Y cut and cutting off the ear butts, you can work the skin down around the back of the head and then skin out the head as you would normally do. I never cut a full dorsal cut, no seam and no sewing.
is this fairly easy
or should i get the video?
im not exactly a begginer
but not exactly pro either
in sure sounds simple enough either way
Did my second deer ever this way and have done all since.
Skin the deer down the neck, to the Spinal Process (where the first vertebra articulated with the skull) with a sharp knife cut just below the Larynx (Adam's apple) On the head side. cut to the spinal process and remove at the joint. follow the contour of the skull to the top of the head. this will remove the entire neck. now cut around the burrs, and back to each other extending rearward about an inch or so. this is the fork of your Y bring the tail of the y back about 3 inches. now you can bring the skull out through the Y incision leaving the antlers intact. this allows you to precisely saw off the skull plate as you desire.
