There has got to be a way to stop them.

I just finished reading some posts in the archives concerning dermestid beetles and moths.(See Bill some people do use the orange button)From what I read there is no sure fire way to stop these critters.Bruce Rittle even said if hungry enough they will chew on concrete.I have been mounting mammals for fifteen years and have not had a bug outbreak yet.And do not want one.I have been tanning for some years now and I am tired of worring about getting hit.I recently remounted a head for a fella that had been hit by bugs and it was unbelievable the damage that was caused.I did not do the initial mount. He thought it was a bad tanning job.He said that the head was fine for about two years and then the hair just started falling out.The bugs were gone when I took in the head.Is there any way to be sure this wont happen to my customers?

Tim, as we've stated, when the EPA removed Endolan U and several other potent insecticides, that ended the "permanent" bug proofing. There are several good products that do work that are readily available, but MUST BE REAPPLIED YEARLY. Ortho sells a good moth proofing spray that you can find in any garden shops or WalMart. There is a professional product called Mount Shield that I use and recommend to my customers. At one time, McKenzie sold small bottles of it that you could sell your customers, but I'm not sure if it's still available.

I hope you didnt bring that bug eaten head into your shop . If you did , you may have problems . Even if there were eggs on it and some came off in your shop or moths you didnt see on it . These moths fly at night more than the day time . Rick

Steve Miller of Trophy Room does send crews all over the country treating trophy rooms. As for us as taxidermists, we dont have the education and therefore, the permits and/or licenses needed to apply the chemicals needed.

Use monthly exterminater service

We operate a large shop and have a professional exterminator come in every month as a precautionary measure. He sprays all the floor area and around the outside of the buildings. We have not had any bug
problems. It also helps to keep the shop as clean as possible to eliminate areas that may harbor an infestation.

I have a couple of those timed release sprayers. You can buy canisters with pyrethrins to kill insects to use with them. So far I've not had any problems! Also, wouldn't those 'bug bombs' work?
