Neck Swell Idea

Submitted by Jeff "458okie" W. on 04/25/2004 at 16:40. ( deerhearse@hotmail.com ) 152.163.252.163

I know the tricks of pushing the hide back towards the head (Joe Meder), or of brushing the hair upwards when grooming, and also carving down the atlas area of the neck a bit, BUT...

...has anyone ever tried applying Gorilla Glue to the "rut" portion of the neck on the mannikin to take advantage of it's expanding properties?

Just curious, & half-afraid to try.

I wondered the same thing with expanding urethane adhesives, but theres no way to control them. Plus, it doesnt expand enough to beat the accepted method. We dont stack the skin forward for a rut look, by the way. Thats just skin alignment 101. You can take a form and add some foam to it and shave it to shape to add some swell for the rut, though. Im just afraid an expanding material like foam MIGHT get out of hand. Let us know how you make out if you try it!

Gut Feeling

My "gut feeling" was to leave the Gorilla Glue concept alone...bad idea.

Thanks for the response, Bill.

The Meder technique I refered to was merely pushing the skin ever so slightly forward (not stacking) so that the hair grooms out fuller. This also helps with shrinkage problems when drying, a bit, although I've had almost nil shrinkage since switching to the epoxies.

I, too, have used foam and sculpted, with good results.

thats what I meant Jeff

I dont stack the skin or move it up, etc etc, for rut deer. I do it for all deer, regardless. So what I meant was, to do stuff specifically for a swelled neck...well, you know what I mean now, right? Hahaha, good luck with those big necks!
