I have a whitetail that I'm about to flesh and just realized that part of one of the ear's is damaged, there is a half moon shape about as big as a tablespoon starting at the tip missing. Is there any way to repair that without replacing the entire ear? And Yes, I DID USE THE ORANGE BUTTON.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Don

Epoxy that spoon in the half moon and glue some hair there.(LMAO)
Sorry Don. I've had a little too much lacquer..or liquor tonight.
Has that part healed over? If so, then all you need to do, is before you remove the cartilage, trace the shape on your earliner, and cut it out, then after removing the cartilage, you need to pre-fit the earliner to make sure it'll fit okay, and you will be good to go.

......to leave the missing part missing?
I'd contact the customer and see if he noticed it...find out if he wants to come by and inspect it himself before making a decision of whether to "mount as is" or to attempt to repair it-for an additional fee of course.-Susan
one way is to point the ear in a backward position with the head turning to the damaged side. If this is ok with the customer. Leaving the ear the way you found it is ok. Before my taxidermy life, I had shot a buck with a healed over 12 gage slug hole in the ear. It would have made a great mount. I have a cape now in the frezzer with notches in both ears from a fence or from fighting. I will notch out the earliners and keep it this way to give it charicter. To replace the ear may be tough to do. you will need to find the same size, with the hair being the same length. Just like going to the junk yard to find a pink fender for an old cadillac.
Bucks with their ears torn up are not uncommon. They get the caught between their antlers and trees when rubbing, and between antlers when fighting. sometimes tearing them up pretty bad. Unless the customer specifically asks me to repair. I do not. I simply cut the ear liner to match the damage, And mount. Many hunters want their deer exactly as it was when they shot it. Although I have never had a customer complain that I left the ear split. If I did I would explain that is what the deer was. ( a tough old cob that fell victim to their hunting prowess.)
thanks for all your help
