oil with McKenzie tan and mount
when i salt deer hide after 12 hours the hide has dried and i am unable to shave becasue hide is hard (hide does cut very well, though, with dakota 5) - give me a hint as to how you are doing this

I can tell already that you're salting your hides flat and exposed to the air. Fold your hides so that skin is to skin and roll them up. I use a 6 gallon plastic pail with a grid in the bottom to allow drainage. I set the open edge down on the grate and allow it to drain into the bucket. When I unroll it after an overnight stay in the bucket, the hide is still VERY wet. I rinse the salt off and begin the pickle. Try this and let me know if it fixes your problem.
