i recieved an antlered doe in my shop. just wanted an opinion on a form. should i get a doe form an use a change out head, or just order a buck form. i think i should get a doe form because the shoulders are fairly large and the neck is fairly small. the doe has a 14 in neck. by using a buck for that is 14 inches, the shoulders will be too small. im wandering if a doe form will have bigger shoulder. any ideas. thanks

jon, Joe Combs has buck forms with smaller necks,I would personally use a buck form instead of a doe form so I wouldn't have to modify the head for the attachment of the antlers-hope this helps-John W.
Jon,
Buy a doe form. You don't have to buy a change out head either. A does face is a lot more slender than a bucks anyhow. When you get the form cut a section out of the back of the head for the horns (like a buck form). Cut it about 1/2 deeper so you can bondo in a 1/2" piece of ply wood on the bottom. You will need the plywood their to run screws in to hold the horns in place. It should be no problem for you. Hope this helps.

and you will wish you had used a doe form once it is all done. Buck forms are different and you will end up with a small looking buck and not a doe at all. Go with the doe form and just cut the notch to add the skull cap and antlers and fasten or bondo into place. They do look nice when done this way. The customer is only getting it mounted, likely because it was an antlered doe...don't make it look like a buck...defeats the customer's purpose...
You have modifications, no matter what. Like Real Life Bill said, they work both ways. Theres does with antlers, bucks with doe features, and combinations of both, like a freemartin. Bottom line is still the same.
When we talk of velvet antler deer, or early season deer, Im amazed at how many folks look for 17 inch neck forms, and then expect it to fit! What about the frame size? Order the deer body size, frame size, that fits, and alter the neck swell to fit. Its really that simple.
So, for this job, what was the speciman? A doe, with antlers? A buck, with feminine doe-like features, with no swell? Take a buck form with early season swell, replace or modify the head to look slender or longer, depending on the animal, and adjust the swell.
