I had a guy I know flesh a deer for me [never been to hot at fleshing, new as well]but i mounted the deer. The cape coulda been a little cleaner but i did go over it for what i could do to it,wasnt real bad or nothing but i mounted it 8 days ago it doesnt stink but i did notice some mold on the hide? Anyone care to take a poke at what it is? Is my deer now better suited to the garbage can?Hope not cause it doesnt look half bad [no award winner i am sure]but like i seid i am new to this. I dont know what he used as far as a tanning agent, pickle? thanks for your help

What kind of glue did you use? Sometimes the dextrine based glues will mold. I add a little lysol to mine.

i used killer glue

Mold - is an indication of excess water in the cape!

In this case - mold grows with excess moisture seems to be the problem! Before mounting it I would try to eliminate it by either towel drying it or tumbling it in sawdust. Moisture on the ski tends to pulp the epidermal layer and cause mold.

Maybe its time to buy a dehumidifier for your shop. Just a good suggestion!

dehumidifier!

Bruce gave some good advice! You'll be surprised what a dehumidifier will do for your shop.

Home Depot sells a 45 pint MayTag unit for $189.00. It's worth every penny if you live in a area that has consistant high humidity. If nothing else it's good to just run it in your drying room. That's what I've started doing and air condition the rest of the shop.

i agree dehumidifier

I bought a cheap dehumidifier at Lowes for around $80 bucks. You'll be amazed how much moisture it will wring out of the air.

Acetone

Squirt a little acetone on the mold areas. That will kill it right now.I have never seen it grow back after this treatment either.Your deerhead should be OK.Mold can pop up anytime in a humid environment. You can have Lysol in your hide paste and still get mold on the outside of the mount. If you don't have or can't afford a dehumidifier,a fan blowing on the mount will help some.Meanwhile, try the acetone,it will take care of your mold.Just keep in mind you are handling a flammable liquid.Hope you don't smoke.

it was very hot and humid
