shaving deer cape

I quit using DP and started tanning. My question is when I am shaving a deer cape is there any rule of thumb to know how thin it needs to be. Can it be too thin and if so how do I know when I get to the point that I am thin enough ? thanks for your help.

Darryl,

Well, I know for sure if you get a hole - then it is too thin! :) Seriously, when I shave deer hides, the first swipe across the blade takes off some of the whiter hide. The next swipe usually gets me down close to where you the hide starts to have a blueish tint. That's thin enough. If you take another swipe or two, then you expose the hair folicles and the hair will fall out becuase there is nothing to hold them into the hide. Good luck. Take your time and you will get the hang of it.

Bruce

Not all deer capes shave the same. They are all different in thickness. You just have to decide for your self what is the workable thickness you like. I like to thin my capes to the point that they look dimply like an orange peel. Some capes need a couple shavings some only need one. You need to be able to read the cape your working on and get a feal for the thickness you desire. Jack F
