looking for a good taxidermist

I'm looking for someone who would be able to do a nice fawn mount for me. the fawn was hit by a car last night but the only visable damage is a slice under the breast bone and a small entry/exit wound where a police officer shot it.

Where are you located and what have you done with the fawn?

We need to know that to help you. You'd want someone in your own area I assume? And what have you done with the carcass/hide?

All wildlife is the property of the state and you must have a Game and Fish dept. permit or lic. to even pickup a road kill that is considered a big game animal esp. a fawn. Even if a cop shot it and left it there these laws apply.

depending on the state

Some states allow the fawn to be covered on the doe tag when the animal is struck, provided the fawn was inside still. Sometimes the tags are for consumption and not truly permits to possess.

i'm in IL right on the IL/IA border. the fawn was put in the freezer (whole)about 5 min after it died. in IL you can pick up road kill and have it butchered without a tag or haveing it called in. you DO need a number if you want to have it taxidermied.

the officer didnt shoot the fawn and leave it. i was there when she shot it and the police helped me put the fawn in my car. the fawn was not in a doe that was hit. it was hit and i found it in the middle of the road with the mother nowhere to be seen. i went to check on it and it was still alive but not able to move and had lost alot of blood. there was a split under the brest bone and you could see inside so i called for a police officer to put it down since this was in the middle of town (there would be an officer near by). in IL while you can pick up a road killed deer you cannot put it down if it is injured beyond help.

the fawn was called in to the DNR the next morning and they gave me the tag # over the phone so if anyone checked before i recieve the physical tag i can provide info to show it is legal.

they did ask if it was a male or female and i told them i wasnt sure since it was dark but i believe it was female and that it was a fawn. i'm not sure how old but it still was reddish brown with all the spots. the DNR said that they were mailing the actual tag to me that afternoon and that i should recieve it in the next few days.

i've never picked up a deer to be taxidermied before but if this tag is like the hunting tags i'll be getting and antlerless tag. our tags are either antlered or antlerless (which is either a doe or a buck with less than 3" of horn)

Sounds like everything is in order, happy taxidermist hunting! Try to look for the combination you desire. The best quality, at any cost? Perhaps a combination of decent quality plus a better turn around time, or a bit lower price? Every taxidermist will be different. Talk to a few, see what they offer, and ask for references. Good luck to you.

Sam,

Im sure if you do a search on this site for Jody Green you'll find some contact information for him. He is an excellent taxidermist. If you can't find any info here, call Van Dykes Supply, they carry his forms and might have contact info for him.. Good Luck!

on the opposite end of the state from you. Although he is an excellent taxidermist, if it is not convenient to get it to him go to the state associations at the beginning of this site and look at the Illinois site. There are listings of guys from Illinois that can hook you up, including Jody.
