Pickling Buffalo skins!

When you pickle the thickly fleshed larger skins, like Buffalo its also wise to add a bit more acid to the pickle. This is because the skin will absorb some of the acid and likewise the PH level will go up. For instance our Saftee Acid - normally I'd use 1/2 fl. oz. per each 1 gallon of pickle - but - for Buffalo I would probably use 3/4 fl. oz. per 1 gallon, so the PH level stays steady.

Pickle it for the 4 days - that way you know its absorbed the pickle then remove it, drain for 30 minutes, shave it, and return it to the pickle overnight. The next day, do the same thing and shave it again. After you place it back in the pickle, the next day examine it and if it needs another shaving - do it. After that you can then neutralize it, and go to your tan.

As a suggestion - for a really soft robe - add our Acid Bate to your pickle. It is an enzyme that loves to eat undisolvable fats from the skin. These are fat that you cant remove using an ordinary degreaser. Our Buffalo tanning customers consider it a must!

Thanks Bruce,
