Fawns inside doe --- legal?

Submitted by Amy Ritchie on 10/4/04 at 2:21 PM. ( amy@amystaxidermy.com ) 24.136.154.164

This guy I know shot a doe with his bow last weekend. When he went to gut her, he found two completely formed fawns (dead) inside her. They look like they were ready to be born any day. This seems very odd to me since deer are not supposed to be pregnant during the hunting season! It's too bad this had to happen, but he did not know she was pregnant. But the question is, is it legal to mount these fawns now (He would like to have me mount them). I can't see why it would not be legal, but I have heard there are laws against what you can do with fawns and whatnot. If anyone can give me any insight, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Amy

I live in NC. As I read the regulations there are no laws against shooting fawns. So, I would assume that having killed the doe with the fawns inside her is OK. And I would further assume that mounting them is also OK...but if you want to be sure, call NCWRC Enforcement Division (919)662-4381.

Sadly, it happens more often than you'd think

Last year I had a newborn fawn bedded underneath my ladder stand the first week of October. We actually had one born in the wildlife rehabilitators pen on August 30 a few years back. This sets up a continuation of the problem. If this fawn is a doe, she's going to come into estrus off cycle. It all starts will a March/April birth of a doe. She completely misses the rut, but does come into estrus in late January. Bucks can breed anytime, so she's bred then. Her fawns are born in August (200 days later). Now those doe fawns will come in estrus in April or May. This is what's happened to whitetails in America. They've become the big game "Squirrels" of my childhood and are a nuisance in many places. We have more whitetails in America today than at any time EVER in history. That's why QDM is and should be a major part of all hunting scenarios.

Get a disposal tag

Amy, the advice to contact your DNR is right on. Here in KY, all we have to do is contact our local game warden and ask for a disposal tag for animals such as the fawns. I acquired two unborn fawns from a roadkill doe and got disposal tags for them. I may be calling on you when I go to mount them.
