Archery season began last week here in NY and while having breakfast at a local diner, (you know the kind, $2 specials) I am starting to hear the "hit 'im just before dark, but he got away" stories. The sad thing about this is that we have a state licensed deer search individual in the area who will track down your deer with his dog 24/7 for free! He is supplemented by ENCON, and all he will take is a donation to find your deer. His success rate is well over 80%.
He found a deer for me in a swamp after midnight 2 years ago, and by the time I was able to catch up to the guy, he had the deer dressed out for me.
Now the point of my venting is this. When I try to give these nimrods the guy's number they refuse it with the excuse that "Ah, I didn't hit it hard enough to slow it down." They won't even consider looking for it. I think it's just that they can't be bothered.
Just think of how many deer are lost to these types of "hunters" every year. In my case, the deer had run about half a mile with a near fatal wound. He couldn't get to his feet when the dog came upon him. I'll tell you, it's almost as bad as having Kerry win!

only half of those guys actually even saw a deer and the other half saw one and shot at it and missed it way bad, but how much fun would that story be to tell at the diner
Those dog search guys dont go out unless its almost a guaranteed good hit, and most of those slob hunters with the "just get one in there to bleed" mentality have no clue where they hit it. Those dog search guys arent going to help them. At least thats been my experience, out this way. Its a shame that for every hardcore hunter with ethics and respect for the animal, theres two or three real shi*theads out there.
People like that have no respect or regard for the animal they hunt. I consider these people the bad apples on the tree of good hunters. Unfortunatly a few hunters like that can ruin the reputation of all hunters and hunting in general for the public. And it is the publics support our industry needs.
Here in Texas we have what is called Hunters Education. Everyone born after 1972 is required to take it or they are not allowed to hunt. Furthermore everyone has to have it no matter when they were born if they want to hunt on public land. I just took one with my son, and they stressed the point of making a good impression on the public about hunting. Public support for hunting is waning due to organizations like PETA and other bunny hugging groups.
The last thing we need are ignorant hunters who portray an image of being careless and thoughtless, and have a total lack of respect for the animal they hunt.
and will say that a bad hit will happen and I cannot recall any deer that I haven't found. But I do know the type of people you speak of.As bad as some of the farmers here that shoot deer year around and leave them lay because the deer eat their crops. The deer were here before they were.
If you truley know that farmers are doing this where you are at, turn them in.
I express my thoughts about it!If you want a place to hunt, well, you just have to swallow your anger and move on.When they all do it and it is already tough to find a place to hunt with all of the ground being leased,I just have to deal with it.
