I have a deer that was brought to me and the guy cut the neck in
a couple of places. I've sewed up bullet holes and never
had a ball of skin at the end of the sewing. I cut a around the area
like a football and still get a bugle. Can you guys give me an idea
what i am doing wrong. I searched in the past and have found anything
that can give me any help. The cut is about 12 inches long
and then another cut runs from the 12 inche cut down 18 inches.

I would not have even messed with this cape. Get another cape. Sounds like you have a bunch of hide missing on top of an extradionary long cut.
I'd get a new cape. Make sure the customer knows either way there's gonna be an extra expense, either new cape or repair charges. There's no excuse for someone cutting a cape like that. How did he say it got like that?
I make it a habit to thoroughly look over each cape as it comes in the door. When you run into that sort of thing like Michelle said tell em' straight out that you will try and repair it and there will be additional costs involved and if it isnt repairable then you will have to obtain another cape for it. Be that as it may im guessing you already took this one in without letting the customer know this already and you may have a problem but tell him none the less.
Steve
You may have a problem when you tell him, like Steve said, but by the sounds of things this cape is not worth the time to repair and it will, in the end look bad on your work 'cause he's probably gonna have problems with the hair sticking up or something later on, with those kinda seams.
I would tell him "after looking it over good, it's to bad to repair" and that who-ever did the skinning ruined it for him & it has to be replaced.
always an option. its up to you to make this work. stitch as well as you can, and as the mount is drying tap any stiched ares with a hammer to flatten them out. then card them as it dries. always give a cape an assessment before your customer leaves the shop so he knows if theres a problem. most will want you to use THEIR cape even if that means a slight defect may show. i dont worry about what someone might think if theres a slight defect on one of my mounts, as long as the customer and myself have discussed that possibility in advance. most anyone can take a perfect cape and do a nice mount. Take that cut up one, problem solve, and work your magic on it! thats what makes a real pro taxidermist.
