Can mature northern,(WI) deer jump an 8' fence? I know Mr. Yox raises deer, any others of you have information on this? Thanks much.

A friend of mine used to keep his breder pens seperated by 10' divider fences. That didn't keep a couple of his bucks from switching pens!

I have personally seen various deer jump over an 8 foot high fence at Randy Wilson's house and once at Billy Wright's pen in SC. The one at Billy's ran along side of the fence for about 50 yards and then sailed right over. I have also seen them jump a span of at least 40 feet when they are running. The measurement was made after a deer ran from me and jumped a 4 foot fence in the snow. We had the exact spot where he left the ground and touched back down. The tracks initially ended about 12 feet from the fence and touched back down nearly 30 feet on the other side.

Deer jumping?

A friend of mine lost every deer in his enclosure when they jumped an eight foot fence one by one over short period of time. He decided to build a twelve foot fence to keep deer inside. The cost of materials for a new fence was too high, so he added a wire draped with spanish moss around the top of the old fence by adding four foot extensions on each post and stretching the wire across that.

He purchased another herd of deer and placed them in that pen. The poor deer ran around that new enclosure looking for a low place to jump until they all died of exhaustion.

That was a joke, for you serious folks. I once witnessed a startled buck jump a row of dense second growth saplings which grew alongside a logging road. We later measured the height of the area which the buck had cleared at over nine feet.

No "Mr." needed, its Bill to you and me, ok? I havent had any jumpers to date, but Ive seen those long jumps Rick spoke of. I too have heard of and believe the 8' plus heights that deer can jump. Ive seen deer hit the fence high and roll over the loose top, but not clear it. I believe like these guys, though, that it happens. A few of us have watched mature deer squeeze right under TIGHT fence too. It amazes me when I see ordinary welded wire fence used for enclosures, deer could literally run THROUGH that stuff!

They can do it if they want to

Deer can jump an 8 ft fence if they wanted to. If they have every thing they need inside they usually won't try. I think a big part has to do with how tame and calm the deer are. My deer have never even attempted to try, probably because I have my pens in a wooded area so the trees and brush on the outside may keep them from going for it. One of my pens is 8 foot. I got a good deal on used 10 foot cyclone fencing from a couple tennis courts, so my larger pen is a lot taller.

The reason I asked....

is that there is a 600+ acre 8' fenced deer farm in the area. Outside of the fence a hunter took a 160" and there are photo cam pictures of another a bowhunter wounded that is at least this size. Two huge bucks, and the locals are saying there hasn't been a buck this big shot here in years.

I know the deer inside the fence are getting what they need nutritionally, but was just wondering if a big guy would jump across from time to time.
The deer numbers inside are considerably higher than outside. And thanks for all the replies.
