short y measurement

i have always used the regular long incision on my deer. one of my customers wants a short y. my question is the measurement. he cut the neck off real short. if i layed the cape out and measured across and doubled the measurement would i get a proper measurement, and would i need to add or take off any of the measurement? thanks, john

Lay the cape out on its side. Then slide a ruler/yardstick into the slit until you hit the bottom (throat), double this measurement and that is the neck diameter.

just one more thing

I would wait to measure it till after it has been tanned. (assuming you are going to tan and not dp) This will save you many head aches in the future.

Heres what I do

Mine come back from the tannery dry tanned. I rehydrate, sweat overnight, stetch, and then measure. When measuring I turn the cape flesh side out and use a cloth tape(for sewing) and measure what I need to. This will go all the way around what you need it to and takes some of the guess work out. It works well for me. When using a cloth tape, check it occasionally against a steel rule to make sure it hasn't stretched any. Happy Holidays. Jeff F.
