Ok don't know if this is going to make sense but here goes. What position will a whitetails ears be in if he is trying to listen to something directly behind him? I am guessing up and forward? Also would the eyelids be wide open almost in an aggressive or startled expression? Thanks if you know the answer!

Joe,When a deer is listening to something behind him,his ears go straight back-pointed directly to the sound.I have stalked deer in their beds and when you make the slightest sound, the ears swivel back to listen.Keep in mind that only the slightest,non-threatening sound causes the ears to go back.If the deer has any hint of a sound that might constitute a threat, his head will swivel around to look directly at the source of the noise. Then of course, the ears would be forward. The eyes could be anything from relaxed-half closed to wide open-alarmed.Just remember that if a deer hears something behind him that startles him,his head will instantly whip around to face the sound.Hope this helps.
Now Jim I have a bit of advice for you. When you jump deer in there beds......SHOOT FAST! LOL
Thanks a lot for the help!
