I think veryone in my area got together and decided to shoot their deer in the neck this year. 75% of the deer I've taken in are neck shot.
Then there is the guy that must have used a chain saw to cape his.....and the guy that hanged his 250 lb. bruiser by the neck.....and the guy who brought me a cape that smelled like bad a$$......AHHHHH, THE FUN.
This is what I call "WELCOME TO TAXIDERMY"!

so far. The guy who brought his kid's deer in a cooler- with baggies full of tepid water in it. How cold is that! I had a disappoinment, too. A past customer called to say he'd give me the cape from his 170 lb deer. Since he was giving it to me, I figured I would drive to his house and just cape it there. I got there and it was cut right up through the brisket and into the white patch on the throat. I took it anyway, I may have some free time sometime when I just feel like sewing! Can beggars be choosers?
I've heard too many times of people shooting deer right behind the shoulders only to lose them or have to search hundreds of yards for their deer. Make a good shot in the neck and the deer is dead before it hits the ground.
It may be a bit of extra work for us, but I am glad to hear more people aren't relying on shooting behind the shoulder because it "leaves more room for error." There are downsides to the neck shot, just like any other shot, but it is very upsetting to hear of people "trailing deer for hours" and never find them...and I hear that story too often.
WELL SAID
The other day I received a 12 point from an old timer who had made a 5 inch cut in the front of the neck so he could cut the wind pipe while dressing it in the field. He explained to me that this was the way he had always done it. Yes, it was his first mountable deer.
Thank you. I'm glad to hear your support.
