anyways heres the part im not sure about. alot of guys would they bring you the deer field dressed for a lifesize? then obviously ventral cut and short Y incision. but if i get my own is it necessary for me to field dress it? or can i skin it out completely using dorsal incision before going to the deer check-in station? read a few posts on this george claims ventral incision is best some other guys saying dorsal. hell if i know anymore. give me some feedback on this one. or is it covered in the Breakthrough manual?

I would agree with George in regards to the Ventral incision being the easiest for DEER. Deer present a problem because of their long legs. You can use a dorsal incision, but you have a long incision in a pretty visible area, so you need to be proficient at suturing the skin back together and have the hair lay right.
I would check with your game commission officer, about skinning it prior to going to the check station, whether it is legal? In PA, we don't have check stations for deer. Regardless you can skin the deer using a ventral incision without removing the internal organs, until after the hide is removed. Good Luck

I dont make a big opening when gutting a deer, personally. Also, sometimes I just bring a deer to the barn, skin it, quarter it, and not gut it unless Im after the heart and the tenderloins. Smaller deer for the freezer I dont bother with the thin little loin.

I have mounted ls deer cut both ways. If the hair looks like it can support a dorsal incision, its handy. Otherwise, rip them up the bottom! Just offset the scrotum. I HATE when the sheep guys cut through the plumbing, for example.
