Years ago, My dad salted a deer cape and laid it over the hood of an old hay chopper, next day, it was gone; we found a lot of hair around the barn, and never found the hide. Our dog had the biggest belly the size of a basketball, so we knew where it went.
I caped a deer and was splitting the lips and the phone rang. I ran in to get the phone and when I got back the whole muzzle was eaten off by my chocolate lab. Man it sucked.

I was supposed to do a deer mount when i was first getting going back in the early 80's . i salted and set it on my porch on a pallet . i live in peoria illinois , it is a huge city so no worries for something getting the cape right , ? my freakin husky had broken his chain during the night and stole the cape ! lol yes i still let him live because he could not figure out how to chow the antlers down ! lol i used a diffrent cape i had and my customer never knew the diffrence !
so you still have some luck to get it done. wish the best of luck to you !bradlee
In 1978 I killed my first buck and was going to mount him. Left the hide on the porch and the filthy "pooch" got him. Have had several more "dog vs mount" conflicts since. Some ended very bad....for the dog.
back when I ran a trapline, i finally caught my first cat in one of my coyotes sets. I sent it off to be tanned and skinned out the feet to keep the claws. I had it back from the tannery only 5 days when my brother brought his dog over and it tore it off the wall and ate all the feet off of it. I wanted to kill his dog over that one.
where a friend used a deer hide and a large box,(or crate) to train his young dog off deer. He waited out of sight until the dog crawled in the container with the deer hide, closed the door and shook him up. Anyone try this?
I once took a rainbow trout out of the freezer to thaw, I just laid it on the freezer top not thinking and went about doing other things. when I came back to the trout a few hours later I discovered about 2/3 of a fish, My darn cat had eaten it from the tail foward and I think the only reason he didnt get it all was it was still very frozen at that point.
