Getting rid of dermestid beetles?

Submitted by JPinTX on 11/29/04 at 9:00 AM. ( etexsmooth@yahoo.com ) 209.169.72.148

How do you insure that you get rid of ALL the dermestid beetles, larvas and eggs from a customers animal skull before it's ready to be picked up by the customer?

I'd hate to think of the conseguences of a loose beetle or hatching egg in their trophy room.

If you do a soak in Peroxide and water the bugs will die. You should see t5heir little carcases floating in the solution.

Borax

The peroxide should kill them, but I also soak my skulls in a borax solution to ward off any bugs being attracted to the skull for awhile after I give them to the customer. I've never had a problem.

Thanks guys.

Sounds like just a good peroxide soak works, and the borax to ward off future bugs is a great idea.

Thanks.

Freeze them

I lost my colony last winter when the power was out in my garage. So if you freeze them, they are gone. Just stick the skull back in the freezer.
