Could the Buck have been left out and maybe that goo in his eye ducts is ice?
Joe, I don't know what the substance is but I see it in a few deer each year. I had assumed it had something to do with the scent glad and the marking of the buck's territory. It's usually light yellow and waxy. What I am talking about is not actually in the eye but in the duct just in the lower corner of the eye. Jim
Happens in humans too - if its the same stuff I'm thinking of - it may be fat or cholesterol deposits.
Most elk and mulies I get in have a these balls of "wax" in their pre-orbitals. I believe it's sap and other things from them rubbing on trees. Could be wrong.
Thats the technical term for what I was thinking of - cholesterol deposits, commonly in the eye area but can happen eleswhere.
Here's some pix of it in humans... look familiar to you at all?

The pre-orbital gland is indeed a gland, and is used in marking and scent transfer. Thats the substance the gland produces. I couldnt tell you in all honesty what the substance is made of, though. When it gets backed up, or clogged with debris from rubbing, you see the hardened deposits like that.
bill i figured you or george could give me some info on this thanks alot
