Cut on face!

Submitted by Todd Adams on 1/14/05 at 11:16 AM. ( ) 68.160.3.196

Hi everyone, have a problem here, as I was fleshing a deer cape around the face, I sharpened my knife and on the first stroke i cut about a 2" slice in face(about 3inches in back of the nose and off to the left side). My question is the the cape is an early season cape, real short hair. How would you guys and gals fix this? If sewn what kind of stitch would you use. Could you even use zap a gap on a cut this large? Any help would greatly be appriciated.......Thanks

Fixable

Granted, I haven't seen it,but I would not stitch it as that will leave a pucker in that area. I would use Epo-Grip pull the edges together, and use small insect pins to hold the two edges together. If done right it shouldn't be noticable.

Epo-Grip

Marc gave you great advice. I would add only a few thoughts. Make sure the area on the form is roughed up and shellac that area of the form for an exceptionally good bond. Keep a rag and a little lacquer thinner handy for any epoxy that may get on the hair.

Please forgive me if I'm pointing out the obvious. Good luck,

Dan

Use zap-gap..

I've fixed one like this, I would not sew it either unless you use a very small needle and thread. I've used just a light later of super glue just to hold it together until the Epo-Grip can bond the skin to the form. Plus it stops any of the Epo-Grip from oozing out of the cut. That particular deer has been in my shop for 5 yrs now and the scare still doesn't show, it was a tannery error...

New product

Breakthrough had a new product in it last year that was for that type of application. I believe they had a booth at the NTA convention and if I'm not mistaken Jeanette used it and may have some feed back. She's probobly busy dancing with wolves though. Perhaps someone remembers the name and may have an opinion. And BTW, SLOW DOWN! Jeff F.

Was it Tech Bond ? If so it works great.

Sew a little

If it is a 2 inch cut, I would sew starting in the middle and sew toward the end until it Just starts to pucker , tie off and the starting in the middle sew toward the other end, until it starts to pucker. NOW you have a much smaller hole to glue together. I would sew with a small needle and 20lb test spider wire.Just another opinion.

I believe it was. I'll not comment on it as I've not personally tried it yet. Jeff F.

Tech Bond and Sikspan

Use it to repair with the same technique used with a dryer sheet. Switched from super glue/gels to Tech Bond, doesn't get brittle like S.G. Works great! Marc R.
