yes you have to boil it because it is live. it takes a couple hours watch it carefully so you dont end up discoloring the horns. i have done several of theses so far and not had a problem. i drill my holes like i was going to mount and several times pull the horns from water and put on a piece of wood and wiggle to loosen them a bit after a while they will come off like nothing.
then i put a little bondo on the scull and plop them back on like nothing. its real easy just takes some time.
good luck

if this is for a wild sheep like a dall or bighorn boiling them will ruin them. On domestic types it does seem to matter if you are careful. Also Bondo is not a good "glue" for horns. Thickened elmers is.

i have done wild sheep, mouflon, corsican, black hawaiin, dall, and they have come out fine no discoloring or cracking ill even send you pictures if you need. I would like to know how you get your horns off so they dont stink, especially if you dont boil them..
you were quick to say no but not give any advice. IF you have a quicker and easeir way please do tell you may give us all some differnt advice we can use . also you dont even see the bondo and it holds the horns in place and replaces the meat you take out when you boil. call up McKenzie and ask them how they do theres bet you get the same answer. just wanted to say how and why i do and say i have never had any complaints or rruined a horn thats all.

whatever

See the orange button for reams of advise on this subject. It is a FACT that boiling the horns of North American Dall, Stone, Desert and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep horns will darken and ruin them. "Texas" Dall and corsican types it is not normally a problem. Bondo is not a glue, it can be used if you drill small holes in the back of the base of the horns and install small nails also to keep the horns from ever coming off. I ship 75% off all my mounts all over the country and world and I can not have problems. For me this is my 33rd year as a taxidermist full time starting out in Alaska for 5 years and now here in Wyoming since 1976. I would say I have mounted about 20 -30 rams every year since I started. Do whatever you want however you want, I was trying to help. My advise is sound. www.jamesmarsico.com
