I was boiling out my european mounts the other day and ran across one with, well a canine tooth on his upper palet. I was reading in the forums and bill yox was saying something about deer with canine teeth...What causes this? Is this rare? Thanks..

I don't know what causes it, but it is rare. I have only seen it once before myself.

I just found this article that is good reading on the canine teeth of deer . Took some time but explains it well enough for me ! Bradlee
Its just a bit uncommon. Some deer have canines, you all know about elk "ivories" but whitetails dont normally have them. If I look at 80 or so deer a season, Ill see 2 or 3 on up to 4 or maybe 5 with these maxillary teeth. One of the ones I saw this year only had one side, and even that was covered by membrane. I only knew it had it because I noticed the angle of the palate there while caping, having seen it before. I took pictures, so itll most likely wind up in one of my Breakthrough articles.
This is my first time seeing a skull with K9's.....I probably would have missed out if this boy wanted this deer mounted...I believe this one was coverd by the gum's too...It only had one....I am deffinatly going to point this out to my customer.... I think it is pretty neat.
I just found canines in a Euro elk, is this the norm?
