NEW YORK DEER HUNTERS

Submitted by TOM on 1/30/05 at 5:29 PM. ( ) 205.188.116.200

New York DEC is having discussions on how to improve hunter satisfaction. One of the proposals is to allow for a special week of muzzle loading season for doe only during archery season. They also want to open archery Oct. 1 and reg gun the third sat of Nov. First of all who isn't satisified? the muzzle loading manufacturers? or is it the sale of muzzle loading stamps. This will have a tremendous negative impact on our archery season by turning deer nocturnal and give the opportunity and weapon to many who will shoot bucks during this doe only season. Oct first? goodbye you dumb four pointers. Third Sat for opening day to accomadate those who work? obviosly they haven't gone in Walmart on a monday to see all the people who don't work. There is nothing broken so why fix it? protest this by writing the New York DEC or attending the "informational" meetings if you can find when they hold them!

The meetings are starting in Feb...

Voice your opinion or go ubheard... The first one is on Feb. 8th at Chenango Valley High Sch. from 7-9PM. The 2nd one is on Feb. 10th at the State Fair Ground in the Art + Home Center same time. Different Regions will have their own meetings, so watch your paper! The DEC needs the input as these are ONLY proposals! And guys, if you didn't look into the proposals indepth, the muzzleloader season is for does only in open DMU's, like 7M which was closed this year (in most part), would be closed for muzzleloader this year. So they would control what DMU's would be open for muzzleloader does. Don't miss your regions meeting!

i hope that you hunters in new york can get things straightened out with your game commision. i live in pa and they have riuned hunting. there are nowhere near the deer there should be and it really riuns the hunting for the kids that are coming up to hunt. i hope that some dday we can get our deer pop. back where it should be.antler restriction well ok they can work but you have to have doe out there for them bucks to breed to have a good herd. and many of the people out there are meat hunters. dont get me wrong they would like a nice big buck . but alot of them would rather see more deer than one deer.

Ya gotta kill deer...

to mount them ?.... And we kill a lot in NY! So talking taxidermy is kind of synonymous with hunting!

oh well

Starting the season on a Saturday is the best thing the state has come up with in years. Many working people have, through downsizing, etc, changed jobs in the last few years, and do not have the option of an Opening day vacation date, so Saturday will benefit them, and as taxidermists, us too.

Starting the bow season on the first Saturday of October is good too. Guys can attempt to "pattern" bucks all they want during the chase portion of the rut, but this earlier start a guy might actually see feed patterns. I like this one too.

Now, the idiocy of a doe only muzzleloader season right in the middle of bow season is assinine. I see no possible useful reason, and I do see problems. Its just setting up a temptation when a guy has an ample weapon and a non-target buck in the field when bucks really start moving.

Ill be at our meeting in February.

It is obvious by your response and the fact that you didn't leave a name what kind of person you are.You can not see the link between Taxidermy and what goes on with various hunting laws and regulations through the individual states. What happens in one can effect another. But more importantly you should have a sign on your truck because you known you work out of the basement or kitchen , that says you do not give a crap about anyone but you. You are the type who sits back while others work or fight and reap the benefits. Simply you are a looser. Always have been, always will. Now back to taxidermy....

Is funny

Bruce i will agree with you. Pa. resident here also. Guess i best watch what i say. since being the last post i made about the Pa. gc. Already said they werent going to change anything for this year either since there are still to many deer? lol. LMFAO. Still where do they do these studies? .. I wish all the best for you in N.Y. Maybe sometime Pa. will get with the program, and stop combining doe. with buck season, and lessin the tag sales.. Hell just shut the season down for a good 2 years. works for me.

I am with Yox...

Giving the hunters more time in the woods and making opening day on a Saturday seem like good ideas to me. I especially like the QDM idea being kicked around of going to 3 point or more on one side rule. From what I can see, all that is good for our business. However, having a muzzleloader season for only does during the rut will create too much temptation and make all the bow hunters upset.

personally

This response submitted by Bill Yox on 1/31/05 at 7:17 PM. ( ) 67.138.10.170

I honestly dont like the QDM as a rule, leave it a choice. Youll always hear guys describe how they see a four point and are just praying for that fifth point so its legal. Well heck, I dont wanna see them take the five point either! Until someone can figure out how to teach every hunter how to recognize three year old deer before shooting (I raise deer and cant) I dont think theres a chance in hell. Some guys will always shoot whatever they see, as it pleases them. Others, like me and Jim, will choose to pass up what we feel are lesser bucks in hopes for a better one. Not a bad idea Jim, I just dont know how a rule would be good, thats all.

NY. vs. PA.

This response submitted by tired on 1/31/05 at 8:17 PM. ( ) 65.196.121.127

They have done the doe only muzzleloader thing in archery season down here in Pa. for the last couple years. The only thing that I think it does is put one heck of a hurting on your deer population.Don't try to pattern a good buck to shoot with your bow because it just get screwed up by all the muzzzleloader people anyhow. To many does are getting shot in the state of Pa. but it just seems like nobody cares, the Game Commission sure as heck don't. The antler resriction is working great, but the question is"How are we going to get more and bigger bucks to mount if we kill the does".Think about it people, you can't raise little pigs if you kill the sow....thanks for listening

I've read that antler point restrictions aren't...

This response submitted by Craig on 2/1/05 at 1:01 AM. ( ) 66.66.226.122

the best idea as they tend to cull some of the best 1 1/2 year old deer that could really be impressive if they were left to live. I like the hunter choice idea but it seems difficult to get hunters to appreciate and understand the concept. Seems once they get in the field those personal rules fly out the window anyway.

I want to see more accountability with the nuisance permits. A friend of mine visited the DEC and asked to view the records of area farmers permit takes and the records were two years in arrears. That's two years that the farmers hadn't even sent the used permits back in for a count. They were still issuing permits to these farms. Why should farmers and their friends get to shoot deer at night over lights with a high power rifle as they come to the only available food source in a given area. Does only...how can they tell? One farmer asked my uncle if he'd be interested in doing this as he currently has 40 permits to use up. When my uncle asked when they were going to do the hunting the reply was in late March. If these are doe only permits how does one tell if it is doe or buck at this time of year when many of the bucks have already shed their antlers?

I know farmers that are growing corn just to leave it uncut for the nuisance hunters. They will tell you its to keep the deer out of the new orchards but we all know the reasons. Yet if some old lady gets caught placing corn kernels in her back yard she gets cited for feeding the deer.

I love the stories of the farmers that shoot the deer and pile them up like cordwood in the hedgerows, talk about a wasted resource. These are probably the same farmers that post the ¢rap out of their property and tell everyone that hunters are irresponsible and disrespect their land in their defense of denying hunting priviledges.

A Saturday opening day sounds great as it will give more hunters that chance to be in the woods when deer are being moved around increasing their chance to kill a deer. It will not affect hunting on private lands.
Muzzleloader during archery gets a "no vote" from me as it makes no sense unless "does only" will be shot. The enticement of a big buck walking out in front of some hunters, especially on the last day of the hunt prior to the shotgun opener, would be like placing candy within reach of a group of children and then telling them they can't have it while leaving the room. The archery hunters are all up in arms over any infringement on their sport anyway. They don't even want crossbows legalized for some reason.

We certainly have our problems.

You are right on the money. I have said these very same things to my friends about this, almost word for word! As a shed antler hunter, I too have found those dump sites from the nuisance permits. Skulls and hip bones dont lie! Great post.
