How to soften finishing waxes?

Submitted by Phil on 1/31/05 at 12:08 PM. ( ) 156.142.187.186

I have a set of finishing waxes from Van Dykes. Can anyone tell me how to soften them enough (without melting them) to be able to use them to sculpt around the eyes, etc. I've always used apoxy sculpt in the past but decided to try the waxes to see if I like them better. So far, my vote is to stay with the apoxy sculpt.

Set them under a light bulb. The heat will soften them enough to get them working.

hair dryer

Use a hair dryer. Also warm your modeling tools as well as the glass eye so the wax don't cool down and start dragging as it is being applied. If it does just hit it a second or two again to warm it. Good Luck

I agree with you Joe

I agree with you Joe, it seems to be more hassle than its worth to use the waxes. Plus, I'm not real keen on the colors...the black and burnt umber are OK, but have you seen the pink?...it looks like something a hooker would use. I thought I'd give'em a try and see how they go, but so far, I'll stick with the apoxy sculpt.

I dont use the wax but I know people that do and they mix with a toilet bowl ring wax makes it alot more workable. I have done this and seems to work.
