Jack, in another post you mentioned that I did'nt charge enough for a shoulder mount ($215). That sounds really good but I've only been mounting for about 2 years. I use good quality materials, mostly McKenzie forms, eppley eyes, natralook earliners and WASCO D.P. The problem is all the other taxidermists around here are $25 to $50 less than me. I only do this as a part time business and I'm afraid if I raised my prices it would'nt even be part time. Thanks for your time.

I'm serious. That is way too cheap, and not worth your time. I'm charging $450 for deer, and I'm still lower than most in my area.
It sounds to me like the taxidermists in your area need to get together and talk pricing with each other instead of trying to undercut each other's prices.
Where do you live?
And NM isn't a wealthy state. I'm not the cheapest in my area by far, but a lot of taxidermists are getting around $550 to $600 per head, and some higher than that. There are some truely outstanding taxidermists in this area, but that can be said for most places.
It's funny, because I hear a lot of people tell me they've been looking for a good taxidermist. I tell them they haven't been looking very hard. What they mean is quick and cheap, not necessarily good.
I don't know how many heads you do a year but I still say your price is to cheap. I wouldn't touch a deer head for less then 400.00 thats my price. I may go up in the next year. I have only taken in 22 heads this year and last year was my first and had taken in 28. I only do taxidermy part time and have two other full time shops that are within 25 miles of me. I charge alot more then those guys but my work is a lot better. DP or tan we all work very hard at what we do. The older I get the more I realize that time is a (presiouse spelling?) thing and we have to charge for it. If you feel you are geting paid enough for your time and effort you put into a shoulder mount then leave your price alone. Jack F
