ph paper -vs- salimeter

i have been using ph paper thus far to test pickles and neutralizing baths and have not had an issue yet, however, i recently purchased a salimeter and discovered that when my ph paper says i am dead on, the salimeter says i am way off. i know the ph paper is just an educated guess, but is it possible to be that much discrepency? example: ph says 1.0, salimeter says 4.0

They are 2 different things.

The salimeter just checks the saline(salt) concentration of the pickle. The ph papers check the acidity of the pickle. So the readings you are getting are good readings for a pickle.

they were for two different purposes. which brings up another question, what is the proper saline level for a pickle and neutral bath besides 1 lb. per gallon?

I maintain my pickle atleast 40% as far as neutral bath? not sure I know what You mean. If your refering to the neutralization bath after you remove it from the pickle you don,t need to check that.

Keep it at 42 - 44% is the best for the pickle. As for netrulizing use one tablespoon of baking soda to a gallon of water.
