Broken Ear Bondo

Submitted by Sam on 2/14/05 at 9:48 AM. ( ) 156.142.187.186

During a WT deer mount this weekend, I was giving the ears a final adjustment when I accidently snapped the bondo in one of the ears. The break is about half way down the ear from top to bottom and it feels like it snapped all the way across as I can wiggle the entire top half of the ear. Of course this happened after I had the entire incision sewed and was just doing a final positioning of the ears. My thought is to try to inject some construction adhesive into the ear at the break line with a syringe and needle and work it into the fracture line. Does anyone have a better idea or method?

did you mix chopped fiberglass in the bondo?

I used pre-mixed bondo

This can of bondo I used had chopped fiberglass pre-mixed in. Its the first time I've not mixed it in myself....thought I'd try it and see if it could save me a step. Needless to say I will go back to the manual method of mixing in the fiberglass. I'm seriously bummed.

No big deal

Inject some 5 min epoxy into the broken area. I have done it before with good results. (use a big needle 20 guage will work but 18 is my favorite) Next time remember once the bondo sets you aint gonna move it anymore unless you break it!

Joe are you sure?

A 20 gage needle is awfully small to push 5 minute epoxy through. I use Epo-Grip injectable which is awfully thin and if just will make it through the 20.

Something that I have used with sucess is a polyurethane glue injected through a 18 gauge needle. You don't need much this glue will expand a little.

Just an idea

If you don't get the results you like from the other ideas, you might consider sewing on another ear. This isn't easy though. You need to consider hair length, color, and size of the ear to match. Not an easy answer, but I have done this....
