Hey all,
Has anyone ever expierenced and odor problem with deer mounts? The mounts were allowed to thaw during transport from a few states away and had bot flys when we got em. They were dry preserved and we never noticed any foul odors. The customer called and only said the mounts were "smelly".
Any suggestions on how to cure the odor problem after they have been mounted and on how to prevent problems in the future?

try tanning your hides. they may have rehydrated from moister out of the air. the fact that the flys liked them tells me they were starting to decay before you got them. a good pickle and tann is what they needed.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, take in a any speciman that is smelling, loosing hair, feathers, or scales. You are setting yourself up for problerms later on. Be honest with your customer and let him take it to someone else, thus it becomes someonelse's problem.
why would a mount "thaw"? im not really sure of the situation here. are you mounting wholesale deer with dry preserve and them freezing the mount and shipping it green back to the taxidermist?
thats the only sense i can make of your post. maybe im just missing something.
if you dont want your mounts to rot.....dont dry preserve. its just that simple. if you continue to DP....then i would consider drying the mounts out before shipping.
even unscented stuff smells like something... unscented is a smell unto itself.
Maybe the guy is trying too hard to smell something. I love the smell of leather and of curatan, but other people can't stand it. Of course i kinda like the smell of a dairy farm too.
well seeing that noone answered your question as to how to cure the smell
this may help a little but not alot i have used it once for a real good friend of mine when i became a taxidermist he got a mount back from another taxidermist and it stunk so bad he could not bring it in his home so asked me for help i called up McKenzie and this is what they told me
they make a finishing deodorizer by knobloch in McKenzie catalog
you may have to do it 2x3 times to finally get smell out wait in between doing them so each time the mount is dry before you redo again. after he let it sit in his garage for about 2 weeks he now hangs it on his wall. NO SMELL
good luck
