FIRST TIME DEER TAIL

Need To Know How I Can PRESERVE A DEER TAIL? I Have Never Done Anything Like This Before. Tried Going to book store to find out TAXIDERMY INFO but told I have to order the books. Which I have no problem but if you can HELP THAT WOULD BE GREAT. OH yes DEER TAIL is in the FRIDGE? IS THAT OKAY? Dont know what else to do right now

Thaw it and then split it from the underside (white haired side) down the center to the tail tip. Carefully remove the bone. I say "carefully" because if you don't use a good sharp scalpel or knife, you're likely to tear the skin towards the tip. (You'll know because the hair will start pulling through.)

Open it up wide and then cover it with borax (20 Mule Team from the grocery store clothes washing detergent aisle). Rub it in with the palm of your hand.

If you want a natural tail, then sew the tail back up with fine, "invisible" thread. Allow to dry, but remember, it will always be stiff as it's not tanned nor "broken".

If you want a flat tail skin, do the following:
On a clean, clear(no printing) piece of cardboard, lay the tail open, skin side down. Carefully groom the brown hairs to look like you'd like them. Then cover with another piece of clean, clear cardboard. Now that you have the tail sandwiched in cardboard, set a heavy object on top and let it set there for 2 or 3 weeks before removing it.
