I have an Axis hide that I salted about 1 year ago, it is hanging on my wall in the house. Every once in a while it has an ordor like a wet dog. I have done many white tails and have not had any odor from them.

If your going to have wall hangers they should be tanned not just salted. Sounds to me like when the humidity is high your getting moisture on the hide and thats where the smell is coming from.
I fool with a few Exotic hides a year and in my opinion it is just the way they smell. All of them that I have fooled with smelled odd. I would have it tanned and that will take care of the problem. When mine are salted they to have the aroma of a wet dog but after I tan them they turn out fine. I have not noticed whitetail smelling like them. If you think the axis smells try a fallow. I have a white fallow doe right now that really smells.
Hope this helps,
Rob
I took a Fallow deer to a taxidemist about a year ago that I shot. He told me it would be ready Nov, Dec and Jan. and still I have not heard from him. I think I will let him finish but I don't want to kept calling him (might be making him mad?). I have started doing taxidermy myself now and I am mounting another one tonite. I also have one for this weekend and that is my last one. I don't know want I will do for the rest of the year. I am building a web site and I am thinking about posting it on this web site. What do you think? Has anyone got any business from posting a web page on this site or how muc? Thanks for your help.
