I have a customer who wants an elk antler mount made from large antlers(14 year old bull) "cut" just above the burrs. He is a veternarian and bought them from a guy who raises elk in the area. I have looked at the elk shed mounting apparatus from suppliers and I am wondering how well this would work for both an antler mount and antlers without any burrs. My deer antler mounts are very nice using oak panels, gold leather, and leather lacing around the base of the burrs. I wanted to use a similar process. Any advice before spending 75-80.00 on the shed system would be appreciated, Terry

If you mount them as is, the shed mount thing will work because you will still be screwing it into the bone. If you really want it to look good, I would rebuild the burrs with Apoxie Sculpt and paint to match. Then you would have a really nice looking set of antlers. Once that is done, I would use square stock steel to pin them to a base. Good Luck!
If I rebuild them, you stated to use square stock steel to pin them to a base...is the base the shed antler system that they sell? If not, what are you suggesting? Thanks for the response, Terry
My thought was the Apoxie Sculpt may not be as strong as the original antler and may not provide enough support for the shed connector. I would do it the same as a detachable antler. The base I was referring to would be a cast skull cap with the male end of the peg inserted into that. You could use bondo also.
