Early Season Capes

Submitted by Joey on 4/19/05 at 10:22 AM. ( joeyrott@hotmail.com )

I have a 29" mule deer rack, I am wanting to mount on an early-season/short-haired cape. My question is, how much roughly can a neck size vary between a deer in the summer vs winter? I have the chance to buy an 18" cape killed in late summer, but am thinking the neck size may be out of porportion to the rack. Thanks in advance

in late summer their necks are pencil thin.

Cape size

I always read about these gigantic capes people get, but almost every mature mulie I get here in Colorado is right around 20-21" during rifle season. So I am guessing the 18" is probably about right for early season. On a replacement cape, it really depends on the spacing between the burrs, and the diameter of the burrs. If that cape came off a dinky rack, it probably won't reach around your rack.
